Skipping Layout and Measurements
One of the worst mistakes is simply “eyeballing it.” If you don’t take the time to use string lines, stakes, and spray paint to properly mark your layout, your fence can end up looking uneven, crooked, and unprofessional.
Improper Post Depth or Spacing
Posts are the backbone of your fence. They should be set 24–36 inches deep and spaced 72” or 96” in the center. Shallow or unevenly spaced posts will lead to leaning, sagging, and instability.
Not Calling 811 to Mark Utility Lines
This step is not optional–it's a safety requirement. Call 811 at least 2–3 days before digging. Hitting a gas or electrical line can result in costly repairs, liability, or even serious injury.
Not Checking Property Lines or Permits

Inconsistent Post Height

Environmental Oversights
Ignoring Slope or Grade Changes
